Who is this qualification for?

This First Aid at Work course is designed to provide a higher level of training to ensure you or your staff can administer First Aid for a wider range of conditions.

This First Aid course is suitable for staff in all sectors, however, it is primarily targeted for businesses with exposure to greater hazards (e.g construction, manufacturing or chemical plants). The course will provide the knowledge and ability to ensure a safe working environment when faced with greater risks, and to treat a wider range of conditions.

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 18 hours of learning, typically over three days.

  • Introduction to the first-aider

  • What is first aid?

  • First aid in the workplace

  • Responsibilities of the first-aider

  • Assessing an incident

  • Scene survey

  • Primary survey

  • Casualty communication

  • Principles of resuscitation

  • The respiratory system

  • CPR

  • Adult basic life support

  • Compression only CPR

  • AED

  • Obstructed airway

  • Choking

  • The circulatory system

  • Types of bleeding

  • Wounds and embedded objects

  • Hypovolaemic shock

  • Seizure

  • Minor injuries: cuts, grazes, contusions, minor burns and scalds, foreign objects, small splinters

  • Bones, muscles and joints

  • Types of fractures

  • Applying a support sling

  • Head injuries

  • Spinal injuries

  • Dislocations

  • Sprains and strains

  • Types of chest injuries

  • Recognition and treatment

  • Major illness: heart attack, angina, stroke, diabetes, poisons, asthma

  • Abdominal trauma

  • Crush injuries

Assessment method

Emergency First aid at work is assessed in 2 parts

  • Multiple-choice examination, in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learned.

  • Practical assessment, in which participants must show how to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the course to real-life situations.

Qualification outcome

You will receive a REHIS First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6 certificate upon completion of both parts of the assessment that will remain valid for 3 years.

For best practice the HSE recommends an annual update of your First Aid skills.

A First Aid at Work certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of both parts of the assessment. Please note that all certificates are now digital unless requested otherwise.

This course meets the requirements specified by the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
