Who is this qualification for?

Any business licensed to sell alcohol, including small pubs, retailers, large night clubs, cafés, restaurants, hotels and sports facilities, is required by law to have at least one personal licence holder. A personal licence allows the holder to authorise and supervise the sale of alcohol.

A personal licence is also needed to apply to become a designated premises manager (DPM). Licensed premises can have more than one personal licence holder.

To become a personal licence holder, an individual must obtain a personal licence holder qualification.

How long will it take?

To complete this qualification learners should expect to undertake 10 hours of guided learning, typically over one day with additional distance learning.

the legislation relevant to you as a personal licence holder
the role of licensing boards
the key roles and powers of statutory bodies
the differences between personal, premises and occasional licences
understanding licensing hours and the law
how to apply to renew a personal licence
the law regarding underage sales

Assessment method

This is by multiple-choice examination, in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learned.

Qualification outcome

A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the assessment. You will receive a Highfield Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders at SCQF Level 6 certificate.

Please note that all certificates are now digital unless requested otherwise.

Personal licence holders must complete refresher training every 5 years and must renew their personal licence every 10 years.
